A new Belgian brass ensemble, “New Brass Directions,” gave its premiere concert on November 17th, 2011 in Limburg Hall of the Parkstad Theatre in Heerlen, Holland.

 

Founding member and music director of the group Benny Wiame led the concert in what was an unexpected program.

The Third International Moscow Conservatory Competition for Winds and Percussion took place November 1-8, 2011, at the Moscow Conservatory in Russia, focusing this year on clarinet and trumpet. Twenty-one trumpeters competed, representing the countries of Russia, France, United Kingdom, Thailand, Spain, South Korea, Venezuela, Armenia, Columbia, Japan, and Kazakhstan.

Dale Olson presented a lecture, The Trumpet of 2011 and Its Precursors: an overview of modern trumpet design, at Rice University in Houston, Texas, USA, on October 3, 2011.  Mr. Olson was hosted by Marie Speziale, Chair of the Brass Department and Professor of Trumpet at Rice’s Sheppard School of Music.

ITG has just learned from the London Symphony Orchestra website that LSO trumpeter Nigel Gomm has recently passed away.  More information to come.

On Thursday, October 13, Dr. Brian Shook presented a multimedia lecture on the life and pedagogy of William Vacchiano at The Juilliard School. Through video and audio clips, stories, and observations, Shook presented the audience with a thorough understanding of Vacchiano’s vast contributions as a trumpeter, musician, and teacher, as well as his wit, intelligence, and humble nature.

Born 9 January 1929; Bob lived in the Fremantle (West Australia) area most of his life.  He started to play music when he was in primary school. Taking lessons with the well known Perth dance band leader Sammy Sharp.  Bob could play trumpet, saxophone, drums, clarinet and piano accordion – but the trumpet was his passion.
