Assistant Professor (of Trumpet), Full Time/Tenure Track
Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Teach and advise trumpet majors and minors at the undergraduate and graduate levels with additional assignments as needed in brass pedagogy, chamber music, and music education trumpet methods; supervise GTA in teaching of non-majors; first trumpet with Wichita Brass Quintet (faculty resident ensemble). Maintain an active and successful trumpet recruitment program and fulfill faculty expectations associated with traditional university appointment (teaching, scholarly/creative activity, service).

Minimum Education Requirements:
*Masters degree in music from an accredited institution.

Minimum Experience Requirements:
*Artist-level performance (solo, orchestral, chamber) and professional orchestra experience.
*Successful college/university teaching experience.
*Demonstrable interest in and aptitude for recruiting.
*Demonstrable commitment to cultural diversity.

Preferred Education Requirements:
*Earned doctorate in performance by December 2012 and/or compelling professional stature.

Preferred Experience Requirements:
*Ability to teach Aural Skills/Music Education Trumpet methods.
* Experience and interest in performing and teaching jazz styles.

Required licenses, certificates and registrations:
No licenses or certificates required.

*Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills.

Position Summary: The Utah State University Music Department invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of trumpet to head its high brass program.
The Department of Music is administered by the Caine College of the Arts, and has 27 full-time faculty members serving over 300 music majors. Housed in the Chase Fine Arts Center Complex, departmental facilities include teaching/rehearsal space, facultyoffices, the 2,000-seat Kent Concert Hall, and the award-winning 400-seat Manon Caine Russell Kathryn Caine Wanlass Performance Hall dedicated in January of 2006. The Department offers the Bachelor of Music in Performance, the Bachelor of Music in Piano Pedagogy, the Bachelor of Music Education, a Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance & Pedagogy. The Department is a member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include recruiting, teaching, and administration of the trumpet studio; coordinating and conducting trumpet ensemble/master classes; teaching high brass techniques; and assisting in the instrumental performance and music education programs. Depending on the strengths of the successful candidate, duties may also include directing ensembles; coaching jazz groups; performing with faculty ensembles; or other duties based on departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate preferred; Master of Music required. The successful candidate will be an accomplished performing musician and teacher with demonstrated success in recruiting and working in a collegiate environment. Experience/skills in both classical and jazz is expected. An engaging teaching manner and outstanding interpersonal skills for student recruitment are essential.

DUTIES: Responsibilities for the position will be to teach and recruit undergraduate trumpet students, direct jazz ensembles, and teach jazz improvisation to music majors. Additional duties are dependent upon qualifications and interests of the applicant and the needs of the department. Maintain an active performing career and program of appropriate research and creative activities. Serve on committees and perform other appropriate university service.

QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in music required; doctorate or equivalent experience preferred. Evidence of excellence in teaching individual applied trumpet at the college level and significant performing experience is required. The successful candidate will demonstrate high potential for recruitment and building an outstanding program. We seek candidates with the demonstrated potential to contribute effectively to a faculty team dedicated to creating a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population.
