The University of Kansas School of Music continued with the "Brass/Percussion Master Series" in 2011, sponsored by Reach Out Kansas Inc.
Since its inception in 2010, more than 30 brass and percussion artists have visited campus to perform, give master classes and share their experiences with students and the community. 2011 Trumpet Guests included Michael Sachs, Principal of the Cleveland Orchestra, Dai Zhonghui, Professor at the Central Conservatory in Beijing, and Raymond Riccomini of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Each gave master classes with KU students and held informal discussions regarding their careers as professional performers and teachers.
In November, University of Kansas Trumpet Professor Steve Leisring and Dr. Margaret Marco on English horn performed Donald Hunsberger's arrangement of Aaron Copland's "Quiet City" with the KU Wind Ensemble in Helzberg Hall, part of Kansas City's new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Also on the program was a special performance by KU's JAZZ 1 Ensemble under the direction of Dan Gailey of John Williams' rarely-performed arrangement of Manne - That’s Gershwin! (1965) from a recording released by Capitol Records, featuring the Shelly Manne Quintet and Big Band. The quintet featured KC Trumpet Player and KU doctoral student Clint Ashlock, famed Hollywood studio saxophonist Gary Foster (KU Alum) and Steve Houghton on drums.
