News From The Trumpet World

Keith Johnson, Regents Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Texas, was the Artist in Residence on Saturday January 21st at the inaugural Fort Lewis College Brass Summit in Durango, Colorado.

Johnson presented a lecture, taught a master class, and performed on the evening concert. The lecture focused on ease of sound production and gaining mental clarity through musical goal setting. Johnson’s master class emphasized free release of the breath and delivering statements from the inception of sound through the ends of phrases. He worked with Fort Lewis College students Nathan Depetris, Cliff Fowler, and Kelly Emery.

The evening concert opened with members of the San Juan Symphony Orchestra Trumpet Section Halie Silverman, Mick Hesse, and Marc Reed performing Benjamin Britten’s Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury and Brian Shaw’s arrangement of Amazing Grace. Johnson teamed with Fort Lewis accompanist Lisa Campi-Walters performing J. Guy Ropartz’ Andante and Allegro and Domenico Gabrielli’s Sonata No. 5. Reed and Campi-Walters played Sean O’Loughlin’s Origins, followed by Silverman and Hesse performing two concert duets by Allen Vizzutti. The Trumpet Geezers, a group comprised of local amateur comeback trumpet players all over age 60, closed the concert by performing original arrangements of overture from The Marriage of Figaro, Saturday Night, Orange Colored Sky, and Birth of the Blues. The Trumpet Geezers are led by Hesse. Members are Bobby Faulkner, Scott Brannen, Jim Rhondes, Gordon Snowbarger, Paul Boyer, Scott Silverman, John Romine, Mick Hesse, and Paul Bostrom. The Fort Lewis College Brass Summit was sponsored by the FLC Artist in Residence Committee, Katzin Music, and the Conn-Selmer Corporation.
